EC releases Common Agricultural Policy reform proposal
October 12, 2011 | 08:42 PM
The European Commission today formally published its proposal on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy post-2013.
The proposal would maintain the current budget of about $75 million per year, but redirect the spending.
European Union Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos described the proposal as a “profound reform,” but said the ultimate shape of the CAP in 2014 would depend on economic and political conditions in the member countries, Reuters reported.
While critics outside agriculture have called for a reduction in the EU farm budget, Copa, the largest lobby for European farmers, and Cogeca, the representatives of European agricultural cooperatives, issued a joint statement that called for more emphasis on profitability and productivity.
