State ag department group defends farm bill programs

As House and Senate agriculture aides continue to struggle with the farm bill proposal to the super committee in charge of deficit reduction, agriculture groups continue to do battle over what may be provisions in the bill.

The agriculture committees missed Tuesday's self-imposed deadline to submit the bill to the super committee, but are expected to complete it by the end of the week.

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture sent the leaders of the agriculture committee a letter urging them to protect the specialty crop block grant program, funding for programs to fight invasive species, and overseas promotion programs.

The letter was signed by NASDA President Bill Northey, who is the Iowa secretary of agriculture and land stewardship.
