A coalition of 60 agriculture groups and a congressional coalition this week called on the Labor Department to extend the comment period on a proposed rule to restrict the role of minors under the age of 16 in farm work.
The coalition said the proposal would prohibit minors under the age of 16 from most farm work, with an exemption for work on a farm operation owned by a minor's parents.
Comments are currently due on Nov. 1.
A bipartisan coalition led by Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., and Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kans., urged Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to extend the comment period.
Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., said in a news release that Montana farmers were too busy with harvest to make comments at the moment, but he urged his farm constituents to send their views to the Labor Department.
