Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will travel to Ohio on Friday and to Florida on Saturday to promote the jobs program that President Barack Obama will discuss in a speech in a joint session of Congress tonight at 7.
Vilsack will meet at The Ohio State University in Columbus with leaders from the university and from the local business community whose research is producing bio-based products and creating new job opportunities, USDA said.
He will also tour a lab that helps start-up companies produce new bio-based products. USDA launched a Certified Biobased Product label so customers know when they are buying a bio-based product, thereby creating economic opportunity for businesses producing these products, the agency said in a news release. The label identifies bio-based products composed wholly or significantly of agricultural ingredients-renewable plant, animal, marine or forestry materials.
On Saturday, Vilsack will visit the Port of Miami to meet with port officials and local business and agricultural leaders, and will tour the port by bus to see how agricultural exports are contributing to the U.S. economy.
White House and USDA officials declined to comment on whether there would be specific agricultural references in the speech tonight, but said the general emphasis on jobs would apply to both agriculture and rural America.
In a news release, USDA said that Obama will unveil legislation, “which will not add a dime to the deficit, aims to put more people back to work and to put more money in the pockets of working Americans.”
The legislation will be sent to Capitol Hill next week, according to the news release.
