Farm groups write opposing disproportionate cuts

More than 130 farm groups sent President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, a letter Tuesday saying they will oppose any deficit reduction package that would disproportionately impact U.S. farmers and ranchers and rural America.

The groups included the National Farmers Union, major commodity groups, the Farm Credit Council, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, the American Association of Crop Insurers, the Renewable Fuels Association and Growth Energy.

The groups noted that farm subsidies have declined in recent years and said that any cuts ought to be determined by the congressional committees of jurisdiction during the 2012 farm bill debate.

Notably absent from the list of signatures on the letter were the American Farm Bureau Federation and meat groups.
