No breakthroughs reported in Doha ag talks

Ten days of negotiations on agriculture in the Doha Round of trade talks have produced no new breakthroughs, according to a source close to the World Trade Organization.

"I have to report to you as of today that there are none yet," David Walker, the New Zealand ambassador who chairs the talks, told the delegates today after the two-week session in Geneva came to an end, according to the WTO source. "But I would also stress that members continue to work for such developments, I hope."

The delegates will reconvene April 4-15 in an attempt to make progress on the modalities or methods to cut tariffs, enlarge quotas and reduce subsidies and other supports. The Doha round of multilateral trade talks began in November 2001.
