Christie Vilsack announces for Congress

Christie Vilsack, the wife of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, formally announced today that she will challenge Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, in the newly mapped fourth district of Iowa.

“I’ve decided to run for Congress, because I want to bring our Iowan values of civility, responsibility, and respect to Washington," Vilsack, a Democrat, said in a statement. “I'm not entering this campaign to run against someone. I'm running for something. I stand behind the idea that we can still work with one another on behalf of the common good of all Iowans.”

Although her husband was governor of Iowa, Christie Vilsack is the family member with the Iowa roots. She was born and raised in Mount Pleasant and brought Tom Vilsack back there from college in New York state.

Vilsack raised $424,000 in the second fundraising quarter, more than doubling the fundraising tally of King, and she begins July with more campaign cash than the five-term congressman, The Hotline said.

Secretary Vilsack was present at the announcement in Ames today, but took no speaking role, the Iowa Independent reported.

King has represented Iowa's fifth district since 2003. Iowa lost a seat in the House of Representatives in redistricting, and that district will disappear in 2013.
