Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg has announced she will resign, Reuters reported today.

In a note to staff, Hamburg said it was “with very mixed emotions” that she planned to step down at the end of March, and that her tenure as FDA chief “has been the most rewarding of my career,” Reuters reported.

Stephen Ostroff, the FDA’s chief scientist, will fill the position until a new commissioner is named, Reuters said.

Hamburg will leave before the FDA finishes writing the rules for implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act. Her tenure was also marked by the implementation of menu labeling in restaurants and other food facilities under the Affordable Care Act.

A former New York City health commissioner, Hamburg has served in the Senate-confirmed position since 2009.
