Pompeo, Butterfield release biotech labeling bill

Reps. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., and G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., today released their Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2014 that would establish a federal labeling standard for foods with genetically modified ingredients, giving sole authority to the Food and Drug Administration to require mandatory labeling on such foods if they are ever found to be unsafe or materially different from foods produced without GMO ingredients.
The bill also prohibits state labeling for genetic modification.
The American Soybean Association, the National Association of Wheat Growers, the American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association praised the bill, while the Environmental Working Group and the organic food industry said it would leave consumers in the dark about the content of food.
