APEC makes food security a priority

Citing the growing world population, leaders of the Asian Pacific Economic Forum meeting in Vladivostock, Russia, on Sunday included a section on food security in their declaration.

The leaders said the APEC countries are committed to “sustainable agricultural production and productivity” and that their commitment includes the use of biotechnology and free trade as well as consideration of the diversity of environmental conditions world-wide and food safety.

The leaders also committed themselves to the implementation of the food security programs of the G8 and G20 countries being run by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization.
