CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former General Wesley Clark told a group of agricultural lobbyists here this week that the Renewable Fuel Standard “is the only successful energy policy the United States has.”
Clark was the first four-star general to address the agriculture receptions that are organized every four years at the Democratic convention, according to Fred Clark of Cornerstone Government Affairs, a Washington group, who chaired the reception.
Wesley Clark, who has run for president as a Democrat and is now co-chairman of Growth Energy, which represents ethanol plants, said that he had joined the organization because he was worried about military dependence on foreign oil.
Although meat and agribusiness groups have joined the oil industry in criticizing the RFS, Clark said, “This is a debate framed by people not friendly to American agriculture. This is a fight we can win because right is on our side.”
