Michelle Obama hosting Kids’ ‘State Dinner’ Monday

First Lady Michelle Obama has announced that on Monday she will host the first “state dinner” luncheon for children at the White House, which will feature a selection of recipes from the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge that was created to support her “Let’s Move!” initiative, which aims to help solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.

In May, the White House noted, “parents from across the country were invited to work with their child to create an original lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable and tasty, and followed the nutritional guidelines set by USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov site.”

Fifty-four winners, ages 8-12, were chosen by a panel of judges by the organizations that teamed up with Obama on this initiative: Epicurious, the Education Department and the Agriculture Department.

Following the meal, the children will be treated to a performance by the boy band Big Time Rush from a Nickelodeon television series of the same namee, and will have the opportunity to visit the White House kitchen garden.

An “e-cookbook” of the winning recipes, along with nutritional analyses, photos and drawings, will be available to download later in the month at letsmove.gov.
