Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told the National Corn Growers Association Wednesday that they should lobby House members hard to pass the farm bill, DTN, an Omaha-based news service has reported.
“I know you are going to the Hill, right?” Stabenow said in a speech the group, DTN reported. “We need you to be loud and strong about this. There is no excuse not to pass a farm bill in the House.”
She added later, “Don't accept no. Don’t accept maybe.”
Stabenow also told DTN said pressure to pass a bill has to come from the 45 or so groups that have signed a letter demanding the House act. With the drought, a farm bill creates economic certainty. “I think it would be substantively and politically a tremendous mistake for the House to not pass a bill,” she said.
While pushing for a bill to get through the House, Stabenow did criticize the House Agriculture Committee’s legislation, saying to NCGA members, “They did not embrace reform to the extent we believe it should be addressed.”
“We now have an overlay with these droughts and disasters and I am deeply aware of that. We have got a real problem on our hands,” she said, then joked “I am going to invite you when I am done to do a rain dance out in the parking lot.”
