Farm groups ask House leaders for farm bill floor time

Forty-six national farm, commodity, financial, conservation, rural, religious and research organizations wrote House leaders on Friday urging them to schedule floor time for consideration of the farm bill so that it can be enacted before the 2008 farm bill expires on Sept. 30.

“The 2012 farm bill is among the most important pieces of legislation Congress will consider this year,” groups including the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Farmers Union wrote to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Even though the groups represent a wide range of interests and some differ on specific policies, they wrote “We are united in our view that the bill should receive floor time and be finalized this year, on schedule. We reject calls for delay and believe that extension of the current bill does not adequately address the needs of farmers, ranchers, foresters, those in need of food assistance at home and abroad, conservation, rural communities, or food and agricultural research.”
