Conrad, Chambliss working together on amendment

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., are attempting to come up with a farm bill amendment that could deal with the problems that both senators see with the commodity title in the farm bill, a knowledgeable Senate source said today.

“Senator Conrad – with the blessing of committee leadership – is working with Senator Chambliss to try to find an agreement that will garner support from the southerners,” the source said.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson told The Hagstrom Report on Friday that NFU still wants more price protection than the current commodity title of the Senate proposal includes.

Johnson said he expects an amendment on price protection to be introduced shortly.

In 2008 Conrad and Chambliss worked together to come up with compromises between North and South that allowed the farm bill to move forward.

The 2012 bill remains stalled with no agreement on how many amendments can be brought up.
