Almost 500 more operators on USDA's organic list

The USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service has released an updated list of certified organic operators, listing 17,673 organic farms and processors across the country.

The list of operators meeting USDA organic standards is current to the end of 2011, and reflects an increase of 478 operators since the end of 2010, according to a news release.

The USDA also put out a call for farms to apply for financial and technical assistance through the National Resources Conservation Service's $50 million Organic Initiative, which supports conservation practices specifically designed for organic production.

Applications must be received by March 30 for early consideration, or June 1 at the latest for consideration in 2012.
