Former Secretary Bergland taken ill before panel

Former Agriculture Secretary Robert Bergland was taken ill this morning before his scheduled appearance at the USDA's Agriculture Outlook Forum 2012.

Bergland was to join a panel of six other former secretaries to discuss "Agriculture: Visions of the Future" in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the department.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in opening remarks before delivering his keynote address, told the crowd at the plenary session that Bergland had suffered a medical "incident," and was being treated at a local hospital.

No word of Bergland's condition was available.

Bergland, 83, a Democrat from Minnesota, served four terms in Congress before accepting the appointment as Agriculture secretary from President Jimmy Carter, and he served in the USDA post from 1977-1981.
