Churches, nonprofits asked to feed children this summer

Agriculture Undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon issued an appeal to churches and nonprofit groups to sponsor summer food programs for children this year.
In a call to reporters, Concannon said that due to budget problems fewer schools are sponsoring summer programs, and that situation makes it more difficult for USDA to find providers for child feeding programs in the summer.
USDA noted that 21 million American children get free or reduced price lunches during the school year, but that only about 10 percent of that number are fed in the summer, so that is when American children are most likely to go hungry, Concannon said.
